The Matrimandir, the golden ball, has spiritual significance and is the heart of the town. It is the place for peace where meditation and yoga are practiced.  It is located at the centre of Auroville, in a large open space surrounded by carpet of green grass.

The structure of the mandir is unique and spectacular. It took around 37 years to build the giant dome surrounded by 12 petals. It is covered by golden disc that reflects sunlight. The inner chamber is used as meditation hall and it contains the largest optically-perfect glass globe The golden colour of Matrimandir, green grass and the vibrant blue sky, complement each other.
