Bolpur is the most popular tourist destination of West Bengal. It is approximately 150km from Kolkata and is famous for Visa-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, set up by Nobel laureate poet Rabindanath Tagore. The area is flanked by two rivers Ajay and Kopai. The place is very serene.
The PoushMela is a fair which is held at Shantiniketan for three days in December. BasantUtsav, of Shantiniketan is world famous festival. The program is organized in Holi and it starts from the morning with singing and dancing to Tagore’s tunes by the students and ends with spreading coloured powders (called ‘abir’)
Bolpur can be visited throughout the year, but maximum tourists gathered here on BasantUtsav, i.e. on Holi and in PoushMela.

Biswabharati university – It is world famous university, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921. It is declared to be a central university and an institution of national importance. Students from all over the world come here to study. The university offers wide range of courses but is most famous for Sangeet Bhavan, the music department, and Kala Bhavan, the arts department. There is a museum housed in the Bhavana for the tourist. It comprises of a permanent display section and the five homes lived in by Tagore, collectively referred to as the Uttarayan Complex, which attracts thousands of visitors.
The architecture of the houses, the interior decoration, the pieces of furniture strewn about the rooms bring to life the persona of Tagore. This unit of Rabindra-Bhavana has 1580 original paintings of Rabindranath and 554 by others.
“Sonibaar-er-haat” in Bolpur is quaint that was started to promote rural artisan, baul song and tribal dance of the region. Haat is an open to sky rural artisan market. ‘Sonajhuri haat’ of Shantiniketan, is a very prominent and well-liked in West Bengal. It is weekly market and held only in Saturday. The haat is organized inside ‘Sonajhuri’ forest. The name Sonajhuri is given by noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The original name of the tree is Acacia auriculiformis. It is also commonly known as auri, earleaf acacia, earpod wattle, northern black wattle, Papuan wattle, and tan wattle. In Bengal, it is known as ‘Akashmoni.’
There are so many haats in Bengal. But the ambience of ‘Sonajhuri Haat’ is totally different from others. The feature which makes it unique is the live performance of Baul song and tribal dance.
Surul is a village which is in the vicinity of Visva Bharati, Bolpur, West Bengal. The major inhabitants of the village are Bagdis, Bauris, Haris, Doms and weavers. Sarkar family was the zamindar of Surul. The affluent zamindar used to live in their large mansion or Rajbari which are still in very good condition. The temples adjacent to Rajbari are distinct due to terracotta carvings on walls.
It is one of the Shakti Pithwhere the waist of sati fell. It is just 9km from Bolpur and is situated on the bank Kopai River.
5. Amar Kutir – It is a cooperative society which is setup by Rabindranath Tagore to promote art and craft of the local artesian. It is located on the bank of the Kopai River and is just 15km from Bolpur The artifacts that are available for sale includes leather goods, kantha stitched saris, bamboo crafts and batik at a reasonable price.
