“Komli sak chingri diye / Water spinach with shrimp”

Komli sak or water spinach is easily available in Bengal. They are very tasty and healthy too. It can be prepared as vegetarian as well as non vegetarian dish also. Adding shrimps, enhance its aroma and taste.

Benefits of Komli sak/Water Spinach:-
All green leafy vegetables are very good for health as they are packed with nutrients. They are excellent source of fiber, protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and C. They help in reducing cholesterol level and reducing weight. They are beneficial for our eyes, hair and skin also. Consumption of this leaves helps in boosting our immunity.

Time required:-40mins. (approx.)


Can be served with: – hot steamed rice and roti.

Ingredients :-
·        Komlisaag/Water spinach – 500gm
·        Kumro/pumpkin – 100gm
·        Eggplant – 01
·        Potato- 01
·        Onion – 01 (finely chopped)
·        Panch foron – 01 tsp
·        Dry red chili- 02
·        Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
·        Salt – as per taste
·        Mustard oil – 02 tbsp

Direction for the recipe:-

  1. Wash the shrimps and marinate them with salt and turmeric powder and keep them aside.
  2. Wash the leaves carefullyand chopped them finely.
  3. Cut the eggplant, potato, pumpkin in medium size cubes.
  4. Heat oil in pan / kadai.
  5. When smokes start coming, add the marinated shrimps. Fry them until they turn golden.
  6. In the same oil, add panchforon and the dry red chilies.
  7. When they start to crackle, add potato and fry them of 2-3mins.
  8. Now add the chopped onion, pumpkin and eggplant. Fry them for 5-8mins till they tender.
  9. Now add the komli sak and add salt and turmeric powder. Mix them well.
  10.  Cover the kadai. The spinach removes water from it. In that water all the vegetables get boiled properly. There is no need to extra water in it.
  11. After 5-6mins of covering the kadai, remove the lid and stir it properly so that the vegetable doesn’t stick to the kadai. Cook it for 10-15mins.
  12.  After 15mins, remove the lid. You will see the volume of all the vegetables got reduced. Stir it and with the help of spatula, test weather all the vegetables have cooked properly.
  13. Now add the fried shrimps and stir.
  14. After 2-3mins turn off the flame. Your hot delicious water spinach is ready to serve.

My tips

  1. Do the whole cooking in medium flame.
  2. Wash and clean the leaves very carefully.
  3. You can also prepare it as a pure vegetarian dish. Simply avoid shrimps.
