“Sojne data r posto/ Drumstick with poppy seeds” .. an authentic vegetarian Bengali dish..

It is a very famous niramish (vegetarian) Bengali dish. The main ingredients are drumstick, potato and poppy seeds. In recent day, Drumstick has been proclaimed as super food. It has many health benefits. Poppy seeds help to keep you cool in summer and helps for a good healthy sleep. This mouthwatering dish needs minimum spices.  It is hassle free simple recipe and easy to cook.

Drumstick – From improving our digestion system to boosting our immunity, it is very beneficial for our health. They are boon for diabetic patient. They help in reducing blood sugar level.
They are excellent source of vitamin B which helps to break down the foods and make it easier for us to digest.
It strengthens our bones and purifies our blood.
They have anti-inflammatory properties and have abundant vitamin C which helps in boosting our immunity system.
Poppy seeds have abundant magnesium helps in treating insomnia. It is rich in iron which is helpful in improving cognitive function. It is incredibly rich in calcium which boots bone health. It contains fiber which is beneficial in digestion and controls cholesterol. It is rich in antioxidant which helps in reducing skin inflammation and makes our skin and hair healthy.

Potatoes – are excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It contains antioxidant. Potatoes are rich in starch which helps in controlling blood sugar level and improves our digestive system.

Can be served with: – Hot steamed rice.

Ingredients :-

·        Bhindi / ladiesfinger – 250gm
·        Paste of poppy seeds/ posto bata  – 03 tsp
·        Green chilies – 05-06
·        Black nigella seed/kalojire – 1/2tsp
·        Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
·        Salt  – as per taste
·        Mustard oil/ Vegetable oil -1-2tbsp
Water – 1/2 cup

Direction for the recipe:-

  • Wash the drum stick and chopped them. The size of each piece should be around 02”.
  • Now make the poppy seed paste. For making the paste, add 02-03 green chilies, poppy seeds, salt and little water and grind it to a fine smooth paste.
  • Slit the remaining chilies in length wise.
  • Heat oil in pan / kadai.
  • When smokes start coming, add the black nigella seeds and green chilies and let it splutter.
  • Then add the drum stick and potato and sprinkle turmeric powder and salt.
  • Let it fry of 06-07 mins so that they tenders properly. Don’t deep fry them.
  •  Add the poppy seeds paste in it and mix it well. Fry them until the oil gets separated from the bhindi. Stir it frequently so that the paste doesn’t stick to the pan.
  •  Add water and let it simmer.
  •  Let it cook for 06-07 mins. Turn off the flame. Your hot delicious dish is ready to serve.

My tips

  • Do the whole cooing in medium flame.
  • As drumsticks are very healthy, for diabetic patient, you can prepare this recipe without potato.
  • In Bengal, poppy seeds recipe are cooked in mustard oil. You can cook it in vegetable oil also. Choice is yours.
